New Display Shares the Area’s Geological History

Next time you visit Hoċokata Ṫi to learn more about the history of the Mdewakanton Dakota people in our public exhibit, you can also discover the earth’s history in a new display. Located next to the gift shop is a stratospheric column, which represents the layers of the earth that were formed in this area over the past billion years. Each unique layer was formed as bodies of water advanced and retreated, depositing a variety of material that eventually became rock and sandstone.

A special thanks to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Natural Resources Department for providing this rare glimpse into the earth’s history. Exhibit admission is not required to view the display. Learn more and view a 3D image of the column.
