Visitor Guidelines

We are excited for your visit to Hoċokata Ṫi. Hoċokata Ṫi and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community are committed to creating a safe, accessible, and inclusive space for all visitors and staff. The following guidelines are in place to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone. This policy is based on our Dakota value of Wóohoda (respect) for all people, animals, plants, objects, and the land we walk upon.

  1. Wóohoda: This is a place of respect for the Dakota people. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has worked many years to develop the exhibit experience. Any disruptive, unsafe, destructive behavior, or inappropriate attire is not tolerated. Visitors who violate these guidelines may be asked to leave without refund.
  2. Food and drink is not allowed inside the exhibit gallery, with exceptions for medically necessary items.
  3. Entry into the exhibit is based on the reservation/ticket time. Please do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your reservation. If you are more than 15 minutes late, Hoċokata Ṫi cannot guarantee your reservation.
  4. A coat room is available on site for jackets, large bags, backpacks, and umbrella storage. Oversized bags and other large items are not allowed inside the exhibit. Hoċokata Ṫi is not liable for any items stored in the coat room.
  5. No pets are allowed, except trained service animals.
  6. Please leave the space how you left it so that others may enjoy it. Do not move exhibit props or leave garbage behind.
  7. Do not touch art on display in the exhibit and gift shop, and please stay at least one foot away.
  8. Youth aged 16 and younger must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.
  9. Drugs, alcohol, and guns are banned on our premises. Smoking or vaping is only allowed outside of the main entrance.
  10. Photography is allowed in the exhibit, following these guidelines:
    • Selfie sticks, tripods, and professional photography equipment are prohibited. All photos and videos for professional or commercial use require approval from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community PRIOR to your visit.
    • Cases holding objects marked with “No Photography” signs may not be photographed.
    • Objects on loan may not be photographed. These objects are labeled with “loan,” “lent by,” “private collection,” or the name of a museum other than Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community/ Hoċokata Ṫi.
  1. Hoċokata Ṫi serves the public and members of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Please be aware that the lower level of the building and outside grounds are not open to the public.
